Who is Artistic S.’auro?
As a skateboarding teenager in the ’80’s, my graffiti tag was S.’auro (pronounced sorrow), which I have resurrected as my artistic pseudonym. Although I was artistic in some ways, primarily writing, I was never able to produce artwork due to what I later found out was aphantasia. In fact, it had such a profound impact, I never thought I would be able to produce visual art.
Aphantasia is simply not being able to see images in your mind’s eye. For example, when I close my eyes and visualize my wife, a person I love and see all the time, I can only make out a vague impression of her face without any details. Not being able to conjure images in my mind, makes it difficult to create anything visual. Once I found out what the issue was, I was able to compensate.
Through a combination of ai software and 3d modeling software, I am now able to “see” what I am wanting to make, which changes everything. I can make models and stage them in a way that allows me to visualize my art before I make it. The computer helps me do what my mind can’t on its own.
My professional career was in healthcare and I have spent decades dealing with death close up, which has dramatically influenced my art. Interestingly, this aspect has become a duality of focus, which can be seen in both my darker works and in my work centered on universal energy and love. Death is the ultimate state change and it informs most of what I create.
Additionally, I am drawn to creating art that makes a statement on current politics, both governmental and cultural. It allows me to give voice to my own cognitive dissidence regarding being an American in this day and age.
Finally, I also enjoy straying artistically into abstract works as an emotional outlet. My obsessions are color and geometric shapes along with symbolism and mathematical concepts like the golden mean. In fact, these design philosophies can be seen in most of my work, not just in the abstract pieces. Some pieces tell a story and some use aesthetics to evoke an emotional response.
